Even though it is August here in East Tennessee and fall decor is making its way onto front porches, it still feels very much like summer. Looking back on when I was younger, I never knew quite how to dress in August. It’d be cold in the mornings, hot in the afternoons, and cool in the evenings. In all honesty, teenage (and even freshman college) me would go through three outfit changes a day; however, three outfit changes a day just isn’t practical for any hard working, errand-running woman. Thankfully, I discovered dresses. I say “discovered” because it wasn’t until junior or senior year of college that I began thinking of dresses as everyday wear items and not special occasion pieces. Since then, I’ve spent every August purchasing and wearing a variety of summer-to-fall dresses.
Dresses truly are the perfect summer-to-fall transition clothing item. You can wear them with close-toe booties or open-toe sandals. You can throw a cute cardigan over spaghetti straps as the sun goes down, and take it off again if the night turns humid. That said, for my fashion blog this week, I’ve rounded up what I feel are some great summer-to-fall dress options for all my ladies out there who just aren’t ready to swap out their dresses and slides for denim and boots.
I saw this dress in the store while browsing for a couple seasonal transition pieces, and I immediately fell in love with it. I love blush colors, floral prints, and delicate, vintage-looking dresses; this chiffon dress was all of my favorites combined, and it was under $30.00! I have to admit, I was concerned about the bust line – I’m not one of those girls who flaunts what she’s got – but I purchased a high-neck bralette in Soft Muslin from Aerie that worked perfect underneath this dress!
I feel so be beautiful in this dress, and I couldn’t stop myself from twirling around and blowing my husband lots of kisses during our spontaneous photo-session at the Covered Bridge in downtown Elizabethton, TN.
I honestly imagined I was Allie Hamilton from The Notebook!
Personally, I wore this dress for a weekend date night, but I believe this would be a great option for any wedding showers or baby showers on your calendar this August!
Although I didn’t have to throw on a cardigan the first time I wore this ensemble, I can easily picture myself tossing a cozy cream colored cardigan over my shoulders as it gets chillier during those late August evenings.
Francesca’s Malaya Eyelet Midi Dress ($54.00)
The length of the dress in addition to the blue color and darling sweetheart neckline make it great for fall. Personally, I love Francesca’s; it’s one of my favorite boutique stores. Many of the tops in my closet currently come from there. Unfortunately, most of their dresses come to mid-thigh on me, which is much too short. Besides feeling self conscious when I bend or having to pray to the weather gods that the wind doesn’t whip my dress up over my backside, I just prefer longer, more classy-looking dresses. When I came across the Malaya Eyelet Midi Dress, I thought, wow! This is such a “ME” dress. (Please tell me you guys have those moments too?) If you’re looking for a summer-to-fall dress with a fairly lengthy skirt that is still open on the shoulders, look no further than this dress from Francesca’s. I imagine myself wearing this to an evening concert in September or even on the beach with a knit cardigan this October. I can’t wait to go check it out in my local store! I had such a great experience at the Johnson City, TN, store that I would recommend it to anyone!
Forever 21 Floral Print Ruffle Dress ($45.00)
Although this dress comes in white, I would definitely recommend getting it in black. This gauze-woven dress features an allover floral pattern and ruffled trim along the bottom. I also love that this dress has an elastic waistband and secure-button neckline, two features I personally prefer in my dresses. I could easily see myself wearing this on a weekend day out to a local farmer’s market. Note: This dress is a web-exclusive.
Altar’d State’s Bluestone Maxi Dress ($79.95)
For those of you who are still wanting to show off those sun-kissed shoulders as we transition into fall, this maxi dress from Altar’d State is for you! I just love the contrast between the bare shoulders and bishop sleeves. I believe the muted floral pattern combined with the “artful plum” color form a lovely summer-to-fall transition color scheme. Plus, the high-low hem of the dress along with the smocked bodice really give this maxi dress a wonderful, contemporary silhouetted look perfect for an warm autumn evening about town.
Kate Spade’s Indigo Railroad Dress ($248.00)
Although listed on Kate Spade’s website as a “summer dress,” I feel like this really is the perfect transition dress for all my high-end adventure gals out there! The breezy fabric is ideal for those humid August afternoons, and the bell sleeves are a very “fall” addition to the beautiful design. Can’t you just imagine yourself slipping on a pair of Tory Burch Backless Loafers or Madewell loafer mules and going out to explore a quaint town or buzzing city for the day?
This midi dress with flared sleeves from Goodnight Macaroon is one of my top transition dress picks! While the softly pleated peplum skirt and beautiful broderie anglaise patterns may be reminiscent of those warm summer months, the dark navy color of the Alessandra dress brings to mind those cooler evenings in the fall. I could easily see myself pairing this dress with the Sofft Wyoming Booties or Pikolinos Java Sandals as well as the or
Draper James’s Plaid Shirtdress ($115.00)
For those of you looking for a casual yet fun transition dress, this plaid shirtdress from Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James collection is a great option! Made of 100% cotton, this is a great August dress option for any lady headed to a family reunion or outdoor sporting event. It’s fun and can even be paired with a set of classic lightweight white Keds. The elbow-length sleeves and darling bow tie at the front of the dress will leave you feeling feminine and flirty despite the sporty plaid pattern. Recommendation: Size up one! This dress is known to run small, and personally, I always like my shirtdresses bigger.
Gal Meets Glam Kaye Dress ($158.00)
A personal inspiration of mine, Julia Engel’s Gal Meets Glam dress collection contains a lot of wonderful summer dresses that can also act as great seasonal transition pieces. While I absolutely LOVE all of Julia Engel’s dresses, I selected Julia’s Kaye Dress as the perfect summer-to-fall transition dress. Not only does the dress come in a lovely green transition shade, but the lack of sleeves and gorgeous fit-and-flare style are great for those August days when you’re outdoors from early morning to afternoon and into evening. The belt and pockets on the hips are great additions to the dress that give it extra character. Overall, I can easily picture myself wearing this dress to explore a downtown or go to brunch with the girls! Note: Images are the property of Gal Meets Glam.
Checking Out For Now
These are just a few of my favorite summer-to-fall transition dresses. I can honestly say, if I’m not wearing active wear and a ball cap, then I’m either in a dress or a fun top and my mom jeans or white jeans (both current favorites). Every time I go into a boutique or chain store, I’m on the hunt for dresses, especially during this time of year, and I promise, once you find a summer-to-fall dress that fits your style, you’ll be wearing it all the time!
