Happy September to all my Sweet Southern Mrs. readers out there! As always, when a new month begins, I like to take the time to reflect on the previous month. Like I said in my last monthly reflection, think of completing a monthly reflection as hitting a reset button on your life! For me and many others, August has many endings and many new beginnings. Summer draws to a close, and fall decorations start to appear in stores and on front porches. Baseball season ends and football season begins. School starts back up, and bathing suits start to disappear. I don’t know about you, but August is one of those months that really tires me out. I try to cram in all the summer activities that I haven’t done yet AND prepare for the busy fall months ahead. After reflecting on the month this weekend, I thought I’d take the time to hop on here and share the eight items I was obsessed with during August!
1. Face Masks
Some of you who follow me regularly may be wondering where my beauty posts are, and I promise they are coming! I got the idea around two weeks ago to try out a bunch of different face masks – all available at Walmart – and rate and review them for you all in one huge beauty blog post. Every two or three nights, I’ve been testing out a new face mask, and I’ve got to say that while the results are all over the place, this face mask trial has been a great relaxing activity to add into my regular night-time beauty routine. I can’t wait to share all my face mask findings with you all in a beauty blog post later this month!
Available on Netflix, Scandal is the latest tv series I have been binge-watching with my husband. A political thriller set in Washington D.C., Scandal follows the life of Olivia Pope, a powerful woman who practically runs the White House and makes scandals disappear for the elite. Not only does Olivia have an AMAZING sense of style, but she exudes confidence. Every time I watch an episode, I can’t help but toss a fist in the air and shout out GIRL POWER! I’m finally in the last season, and I can’t wait to figure out how it all ends.
3. School Supplies
Recently I dedicated a whole Back-To-School blog post to school supplies; however, it wouldn’t be a proper monthly reflection if I didn’t include school supplies in my top eight obsessions! Textbooks, notebooks, calendars, pens, pencils, electronics… I literally looked at every school supply collection within a 15-mile radius of my home! While Target had the best selection (as always), I did purchase a couple school supplies from Amazon, Walmart, and Walgreens. Check out my blog post if you’re looking for more school supply specifics!
4. YouTuber Sam Ozkural
Because my husband and I opted not to get cable in our home, I’ve been having to get creative with how and what I watch! Lately, I’ve been on a YouTube kick. Just ask my husband… Chances are if I’m on my phone, iPad, or even MacBook, I’ve got YouTube on! I’ve discovered that, like bloggers, there are so many talented lifestyle YouTubers out there with content worth watching! One of my August favorites was Sam Ozkural!
Based in California, Sam is a boho girl with two cute dogs, an awesome home, and supportive boyfriend. I’ve recently been trying to shrink my meat intake to zero, not because I’m opposed to eating animals but because meat is just gross to me (the smells, the look… I LITERALLY JUST GAGGED THINKING ABOUT IT!). As a vegan, Sam shares so many recipes and tips on how to survive without consuming meat or dairy products! She’s very open on how being a vegan has impacted her body and even changed her lifestyle. Check her out!
5. Taylor Swift’s Reputation
While Taylor Swift’s latest album Reputation has been out for a while now, this past August I literally listened to the soundtrack on repeat! Why? Because I’m obsessed with Taylor (She is the greatest songwriter of this generation!), and I was pumping myself up to see her in concert! She has so many good candid and witty song lyrics in her latest album. I’ve listed a few of my favorites below:
- “Handsome, you’re a mansion with a view.”
- “I was once poison Ivy, but now I’m your daisy. And baby for you, I would fall from grace, just to touch your face.”
- “Now you try on calling me ‘baby’ like trying on clothes.”
- “All the drama queens taking swings. All the jokers dressing up as kings. They fade to nothing when I look at him.”
- “Feeling so Gatsby for that whole year!”
She’s got such a variety of songs on this album, and even though my husband is hoping she’ll go back country, I can’t help but love this phase, so much so I just purchased the piano music in the hopes of learning some of the songs. My favorite songs from Reputation are “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” and “Call It What You Want.” Even if you don’t identify as a Taylor Swift fan, you should at least listen to her album once all the way through. Note: In my next travel blog post I’ll be sharing more about my Taylor Swift concert experience!
6. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before *No Spoilers!
A Netflix original movie based on the book by Jenny Han, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is the “IT” movie of August. I rarely watch movies based on books until I read the book, but in this case, I made an exception, and I am so glad I did! While babysitting aka hanging out with my little sister, we watched this movie together, and I actually went out a couple hours later and purchased the first book (it’s a trilogy) to read.. then I made my husband watch it with me again that same night! I kind of acted like I’d never seen it before because if he knows I’ve seen a movie and he hasn’t, he will bug me until I reveal how the movie ends! A teen romance, the main character Lara Jean finds herself in a “fake” high school contract relationship with hottie Peter Kavinsky after five of her secret love letters get out. All of a sudden Lara Jean isn’t as invisible as she used to be! This movie is so fun, and I’m hoping the rumors of a sequel are true! I’ll do a proper movie/book comparison on the blog once I finish the book!
7. Five Daughters Bakery
While I was in Franklin, Tennessee, I had the opportunity to stop in at Five Daughters Bakery, a very popular sweet shop in the area! A family-owned business, Five Daughters Bakery has perfected the 100 layer doughnut! Yes I said 100 layers people! Although the doughnut did cost $4.50, it was well worth it. After purchasing one of their “Purist” 100 layer doughnuts, my husband and I sat outside on a bench and split our doughnut. My husband inhaled his half (his version of loving something), and I savored mine (my version of loving something)! With only five locations in all of America (three of which are in the Nashville area), Five Daughters Bakery is a gem that is well worth the drive, especially if you live within an hour or two! I can’t wait to go back!
8. Top Golf
The ultimate entertainment center, Top Golf is perfect for anyone wanting to catch up or give golf a try. My sister and her husband tried out Top Golf in early August, and I surprised my golf-loving husband with a trip to Top Golf during our Nashville trip in late August. Tip: Go before noon! It’s a lot cheaper! I didn’t expect to have a lot of fun because all I’d ever done was putt-putt, but I ended up having loads of fun! You can hit golf balls, play golf-related games, eat, drink, and catch up with friends. My husband and I are pretty competitive people, and although I had terrible form, I had some major luck hitting golf balls into certain areas of the course to earn some major points! We spent about two hours at Top Golf in our own bay, and although I was sore for days afterwards, I don’t regret it one bit! The business is actually building a new Top Golf location in Greenville, SC, which is only two hours from us, and I can’t wait for it to open next year so we can go more often.
Hitting that reset button!
I have so many great memories from August, and I can’t wait to see what obsessions will develop and stick this September!I’d love to hear what items you were obsessed with in August, so feel free to share them below. Until next time my darlin’,
